Participants will learn the following:

 How to assess need for orofacial myofunctional therapy
 Conditions that are related to muscle dysfunctions (what to look for)
 How OMDs affect overall dental health
 orthodontic relapse
 benefits to correcting oral muscle dysfunction
 Anatomy and physiology related to identifying dysfunctional oral habits
 Breathing/airway dysfunction and how these affect oral and overall health
 body posture (head, neck and body)
 tongue posture
 lip closure
 tongue tie/lip
 Dysfunctional/functional chewing patterns and how they affect occlusion
 Correct oral resting posture and breathing habits
 especially related to sleep
 Speech dysfunction as it relates to occlusion
 Conditions that can result because of incorrect tongue posture/incorrect breathing habits
 Through the establishment of correct functional activity of the tongue, lips, jaw and breathing; normal growth and development may progress in a stable, homeostatic environment
 For many years orthodontists and dentists have been aware that pressure exerted by the tongue can cause changes in the face and dental structures, but only in the past 30 years has this been a subject of therapeutic evaluation and scientific investigation

Bending appliance wire
Adjusting various appliance clasps

Course Description:   Airway, Relapse Prevention & Myofunctional Therapy
Students will learn about Orofacial Myofunctional Assessment Tools, understand the basics of the therapy techniques, learn to assess tongue, lip, head, neck and body posture, and learn to develop a protocol for each patient with help from family members.
 

Instructor

Sandra Coulson OMT Sandra Coulson OMT graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with degrees in Speech Therapy and Education, and a master's degree in health sciences. In 1969 she began to practice as a Certified Orofacial Myologist. In 2003, Sandra started The Coulson Institute of Orofacial Myology, teaching in Denver. Through teaching and lecturing globally, she has trained thousands of therapists in her courses.
